Australia was invited to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2015 for the first time to commemorate the 60th Eurovision Song Contest. Australia's participation in the 2015 contest was set to be a one-off event but it was confirmed in November 2015 that the country would return to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2016 and is permitted to participate in the competition as the broadcaster SBS is an EBU Associate.

Australia is the sixth largest country in the world by landmass and is the first country from the Oceania region (and the second country outside Eurasia, after Morocco in 1980) to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Australia has used an internal selection to select their representatives since they joined the Eurovision Song Contest in 2015. Dami Im represented Australia in 2016 with Sound Of Silence, winning the jury vote and finishing second overall. The song won the Marcel Bezençon Award in the composer category. Australia has always qualified for the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Australia was featured as the interval act in the Second Semi-Final of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest when Jessica Mauboy performed the song Sea Of Flags. She will represent Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2018.
